Welcome to your NCLEX reviewer and practice questions for fluids and electrolytes. In this nursing test bank, test your competence on the concepts of homeostasis, fluids, and electrolytes. Fluid and electrolyte balance plays an important role in homeostasis, and critical care nurses assume a vital role in identifying and treating the physiologic stressors experienced by critically ill patients that disrupt homeostasis.

Electrolytes are minerals that give off an electrical charge when they dissolve in fluids like blood and urine. Your body makes electrolytes. You also get these minerals from foods, drinks and supplements. Electrolytes in blood, tissue, urine and other body fluids play a critical role in balancing body fluids, regulating your heart rhythm and supporting nerve and muscle function.
Electrolyte tests. A sample of blood is taken from your child's vein, and the amounts of minerals known as electrolytes are measured. This includes sodium, potassium, calcium, and glucose. These minerals are important for the body to function properly. Children who have lost large amounts of fluid due to vomiting or diarrhea often lose large amounts of the various electrolytes as well. Your child's doctor uses electrolyte tests to help determine when your child might need extra fluids given intravenously or other medications to help with dehydration and mineral loss. 041b061a72
